1. Activated Carbon cylinder with a pore size of 1 micron
Activated carbon is organic material (coconut shell) and has a very high adsorption capacity for odours, colour, taste, metals such as lead, as well as yeasts, chlorine, pharmaceutical residues, and other chemicals.

Differences between the AQUA Logic Gravity Bucket, Gravity Blue, and Gravity RVS (Stainless Steel)

All sets contain an AQUA Logic Gravity CS-Ultra filter element. This ultrafiltration element allows you to make even surface water safe for drinking.

There is one small difference:

• The Gravity Bucket set includes the 5-inch CS-Ultra element.

• The Gravity Blue and Gravity RVS (Stainless Steel) include the 8-inch CS-Ultra element.

In practice, this makes only a minor difference. The extra length mainly adds more activated carbon at the top of the element. Because the water level in the upper reservoir drops quickly during gravity filtration, this upper section is used less intensively per batch. Filtration performance and safety are essentially the same.

The main differences lie in the water reservoirs and a few extra features:

Gravity Blue and Gravity RVS

These are designed as consumer products, with higher-quality and more attractive water reservoirs.

• The stainless steel (RVS) model is considered highly hygienic: biofilm adheres less easily to its smooth, non-porous surface, and the opaque metal blocks light, reducing microbial growth inside the reservoir. In addition, the stainless steel unit is built on a raised base, making it easy to place a glass under the tap when dispensing water.

• The Gravity Blue has two mounting holes (with one sealing cap), so you can install a second filter element if you want. This increases daily filtration capacity.

Gravity Bucket

The Gravity Bucket set is the budget-friendly version, made from food-grade plastic buckets that we modify and assemble ourselves.

These systems are widely used in emergency aid projects in collaboration with the IBOTA.org Foundation, due to their low weight, compact size, and excellent cost-to-performance ratio.

Safety of materials

All reservoirs—Blue, RVS, and Bucket—are made from food-grade materials and are BPA/BPS-free.

Groundwater and De-Ironing

Groundwater may contain iron, which can cause a metallic taste and discoloration. You can easily remove iron from the water before filtering it with the AQUA Logic emergency water filter. Follow these steps:

1. Add Oxygen: Pour the groundwater back and forth between two buckets several times. This allows the water to absorb oxygen, oxidizing the iron.
2. Let it Settle: Allow the water to sit for several hours so the oxidized iron particles settle at the bottom.
3. Separate the Water: Carefully scoop or pour the clear water from the top into another bucket, leaving the iron particles at the bottom.
4. Filter: The clear water is now ready to be filtered with the AQUA Logic emergency water filter.

This simple method works well for water with low to moderate iron content. For water with high iron levels, additional techniques or tools may be necessary.

How to use

1. Marking the Filter First Use Date
Use the supplied date sticker to note the date of first use. Stick it visibly on the one of the water containers. The adviced service life is 1 year; the actual lifespan of the filter element may vary depending on the degree of contamination in the source water. As long as water continues to flow through the filter, it is safe to drink, even if the flow rate decreases.

2. Installing the Filter Element
Insert the filter outlet with one sealing ring attached, through the hole in the bottom of the top water container. Place the second sealing ring on the outlet from below and tighten the nut securely.

3. Assembling the System
Assemble all parts of the filter system (see also:Assembly Gravity Filter Set). Stack the two water containers. Fill the top container with water to purify. After a few minutes, water will begin dripping into the bottom container. As the water level in the upper container decreases, the flow rate of the filtered water will also decrease.

Ready for Use
If sufficient water is available, it is recommended to not use the first batch of filtered water (ca. 5 liter) for consumption. After that, the filter is ready to provide clean and safe drinking water.

Note: Always use the most clean water source that is available and preferably use the filter in a clean environment.

Maintenance                        

Removing Sediment Layer
A thin layer of water containing settled particles may remain in the upper container. This is normal. Sedimentation removes undissolved particles by allowing heavier materials to sink. Always discard this settled water layer when refilling the reservoir.

Cleaning the Filter Element
If the water flow slows down, the filter can be cleaned easily:

1. Using the integrated Cleaning Pad, the filter surface can be firmly sanded clean (see image beside).
2. Rinse the actived carbon surface. Make sure only clean water touches the water outlet. As a precaution, do not use the first liter of filtered water for consumption.

How to wash the PVDF Ultra Membranes

Depending on the degree and type of water pollution, the surface of the filter element can become clogged. This can be recognized by the decrease in the amount of outflowing water. If this is the case you can do the following to wash the ultra membranes:

1. Turn off the water supply and turn on the tap to relieve the water pressure from the system.
2. Place a bowl under the filter to collect water coming out when opening it. Open the filter housing by turning the blue plastic ring counter clockwise.
3. Take the filter cartridge and open it by pulling off the colored parts while twisting.
4. Rinse the membranes with water. Use your hands to wash the membranes between your hands, using back and forth motions as you rinse them.
5. Replace the filter element and tighten the housing again, but do not do this too tightly. When closing the housing, make sure that the rubber sealing ring is properly positioned and clean.
6. The filter should be bled again after maintenance by pressing and holding the bleed button until all the air has escaped. Even after each maintenance, we recommend that you do not use the first couple of litres water for consumption.

Although the filter housing is frost-resistant, it is important to drain the water filter and the system before winter storage and allow the filter elements to dry thoroughly (see also storage instructions). This prevents the risk of freezing and damage to the water filter.

Lifespan

The recommended maximum duration of use (with continuous use) is 2 years. Therefore, the filter element must be replaced after 2 years. Periodically check the expiration date that you have written on the date sticker.

Note: The actual life of the filter element depends on the degree of contamination in the water to be treated. As long as water comes out of the filter, it is suitable drinking water because it has been filtered through the ultra membranes, provided that the water filter is used as explained in this user manual.

How to store after use

Rinse the filter again before using it again.
Wet: store the filter element (for example in a plastic bag) in the refrigerator.
Dry: Find a suitable place to let the filter element dry without mold formation.

How to wash the PVDF Ultra Membranes

Depending on the degree and type of water pollution, the surface of the filter element can become clogged. This can be recognized by the decrease in the amount of outflowing water. If this is the case you can do the following to wash the ultra membranes:

1. Turn off the water supply and turn on the tap to relieve the water pressure from the system.
2. Place a bowl under the filter to collect water coming out when opening it. Open the filter housing by turning the blue plastic ring counter clockwise.

How to use

1. Connecting the filter
Make sure you purchase the required connection materials, such as flexible braided hoses, separately for correct installation of the filter into the water line. It is recommended to install a shut-off valve before the water filter. Screw the supplied 3/4 inch nipples into the lid of the filter.

Note: the filter housing already contains sealing rings. No O-rings or Teflon tape are needed for the nipples. Ensure that the water flow follows the correct direction (IN/OUT).

2. Mounting the filter system
Use the supplied wall bracket to mount the system. Allow at least 10 cm of free space below the system so that the bowl and filter element can be easily removed.

3. Marking the date of first use
Fill in the recommended replacement date of the filter on the supplied date sticker and place it visibly on the filter housing.

4. Venting the system
Before first use, the filter must be vented. Press and hold the black vent button on top of the filter lid (while the system is pressurized and the tap is closed) until all air has escaped.

Tip: hold a cloth near the vent to catch any water that may be released.

5. First use
It is recommended not to use the first five liters of filtered water for consumption. After this, the filter system is ready to provide clean and safe drinking water.

Maintenance

Depending on the degree and type of water contamination, the surface of the filter element may become clogged. This is noticeable by a reduced flow rate. If this happens, you can wash the membranes: 

1. Shut off the water supply and open a tap to relieve system pressure.
2. Place a container under the filter. Unscrew the blue plastic ring counterclockwise to open the housing.
3. Remove the filter cartridge and open it by twisting the colored parts apart.
4. Rinse the membranes with clean water. Use your hands to gently wash the membranes by moving them back and forth while rinsing.
5. Reinsert the filter element and close the housing; do not overtighten. Ensure the rubber sealing ring is clean and correctly positioned.
6. Vent the system again as described above.
7. Do not use the first liters after maintenance for consumption.

Shelf life and Life Span

The recommended service life under daily use is approximately 2 years.
